A dark journey into sex, death and the purgatory in between

A trip to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, Tasmania is the closest you’ll get to entering Hades. In a good way.

Carved into a mountain, you drop into the dark depths of the museum and then flail your way back to the surface.

This photo is looking down into the complicated web-like stair structures that emerge from the darkness. A smart device acts as your compass, your string in the labyrinth, that helps you find your way out. Along the way, you meet the strangest characters, from a tiny trophy rug made out of a kitten’s hide, to a digestive machine that stinks like Victorian London, to pieces that pull at the dark side of your mind.

The most amazing thing for me was that this is all created by one man. It was David Walsh’s vision and the handheld guide lets you see the artworks through his eyes, which for me, is unique in the museum world of this scale.

An amazing place, a world of it’s own and the darkness will stay with me in my bowels forever.
