Bringing Vincent Van Gogh back to life
There’s something truly audacious about creating a movie about Vincent Van Gogh that is animated in a painting style mimicking his own.
It’s an endeavour that’s setting an incredibly high bar, it’s something that’s almost impossible to pull off, yet in my head I want nothing more than for it to succeed.
The whole idea of seeing a world as imagined through the lens of a great artist is a gift that I never thought was possible – and it opens the possibilities of seeing the world through other artist’s eyes as well. It’s a great project, directed by Dorota Kobiela, based in Poland, over 100 painters were needed to create the film’s 12 oil paintings per-second animation.
A feature length film animated by oil painting. It’s insanity! But it’s not the first to put art in film. Australian musician, Daniel Johns, formerly of Silverchair, brought together Newcastle based artists for his music video for ‘Going on 16’.
The video compiles 43 individually animated segments into one clip with each animator given five seconds of footage (approx. 55 guide frames) which they imbued with their style.
I love new perspectives, I love when artists show themselves in new light, push the boundaries of what we think is possible and create a richer world for us to live in. That’s what we’re here for, to show the world through our eyes and get a glimpse of our dented, shiny, curious hearts.
